After years of careful planning, the restoration of Ruthin Town Clock—also known as the Peers Memorial—is underway, led by R. Moore Building Conservation Ltd. This vital project will revitalise the clock, addressing key conservation issues and preserving its historic value as a centrepiece of Ruthin Town Square.
Funded by contributions from the Clocaenog Wind Farm Community Fund, Denbighshire County Council, and The National Lottery Heritage Fund, the work aims to safeguard the clock’s future while enhancing its role in the community.
The careful conservation and remedial repairs are slowly breathing life back into the clock tower. Fragile stone is being secured with specialist resin, injected into the fissures to stabilise them.
The mortar joints are being repointed with lime mortar—a traditional choice that ensures the stone can withstand extreme weather, especially during cold spells. Gentle cleaning of the intricate sculptural surfaces is revealing the monument’s original splendour, bringing back the detail as if it had just been completed.
Although we couldn’t help but notice that some repairs have already been made in the past!
Finally, the corroded wrought iron finial at the very top will soon be shot blasted, restored, and painted black. The ball finial that the cross springs from will be re-gilded in 24 karat gold leaf, restoring a touch of grandeur to this historic landmark. It will be the glorious final finishing flourish that will light up the heart of Ruthin for many years to come.
