After years of meticulous planning and consultation, the restoration of Ruthin Town Clock, also known as the Peers Memorial, is finally in progress. The project is being undertaken by building conservation contractor R. Moore Building Conservation Ltd.
The firm’s director, Rory Moore, shared his enthusiasm: “We’re absolutely delighted to begin this work. Not only will it revitalise this significant memorial, but our efforts will also help prevent further deterioration of a monument that stands as the visual centrepiece of Ruthin Town Square.”
The work undertaken will address the various issues highlighted in the condition report of staining and air pollution crusting, vegetation and moss growth and stonework delaminating and blistering. These enhancements will take up to four months to complete.
The Ruthin Town Clock boasts a rich history, having been constructed in 1883 to honour Joseph Peers, the local Clerk to the Justices of the Peace. Designed in the Gothic style by the distinguished Victorian architect John Douglas, the clock also functioned as a timer, regulating the gas supply for the town’s streetlights.
The funding application for the Clock Tower was informed by the earlier work of the Ruthin Clock Tower Restoration Committee, which was established late in 2020. The committee secured financial support from the Clocaenog Wind Farm Community Fund, which with funding contributions from Denbighshire County Council and Ruthin Town Council, enabled them to do the initial feasibility work to understand the extent of the restoration work required to preserve the Clock Tower. This project as one of the 10 included within the Council’s application to UK Government, was allocated funding of £131,950.
Denbighshire County Council were also successful in their application for a further £55,000 from The National Lottery Heritage Fund, which will be used to support the cost of the renovation works and will enable the Clock Tower Committee to widen the scope of the events that they are able to offer within the community.
