The process is methodical – much like working through a complex jigsaw. Each stone is carefully removed, its position recorded, and its condition assessed. This allows us to understand how the structure fits together and to plan the reinstatement. In some cases, stones have to be re-carved where weathering or delamination has compromised their integrity.
Part of our expertise lies not only in traditional stonemasonry but also in the design and installation of the hidden fixings that pin the pinnacles together. Many of the Victorian and later fixings had contributed to the decline, so part of the work involves replacing them with materials and methods that ensure long-term stability. By combining traditional craftsmanship with modern conservation knowledge, we ensure that the repaired pinnacles will perform structurally and aesthetically for many decades to come.
