Last week in Ruthin, our Director, Rory Moore, joined Fiona Gale (Chair of the Clock Tower Restoration Committee) and Elinor Gray-Williams (Conservation Architect) to speak to a packed audience at the Old Courthouse.
Despite a light dusting of snow, the local community turned out in force to hear about the progress of the Ruthin Clock Tower conservation project.
Rory described the complexities of conserving the monument, explaining the challenges of working with its varied types of stone and the specialist techniques being used to ensure the clock tower continues marking time for generations to come.
He also shared an intriguing discovery made during the restoration: a socket at the top of the iron scrollwork, which would once have held a decorative weather vane. Plans are now in place, in partnership with Flintshire Fabrications, to recreate the weather vane and crown the clock tower with it on the final day of work—a fitting conclusion to this significant project.
Funded by contributions from the Clocaenog Wind Farm Community Fund, Denbighshire County Council, and The National Lottery Heritage Fund, this vital work aims not only to safeguard the clock tower’s future but also to enhance its place as a cherished symbol within the community.
